Skinner: "I'm Solid To The Owls"

Josh Skinner, a 6-6 230 pound Defensive End from Silsbee,TX became the first Rice Owl commit of the 2009 class when he gave his verbal pledge to Coach David Bailiff last Wednesday.

Since his commit became public knowledge recruiting has only intensified for Skinner however.

"Northwestern told me they were going to offer but I said I was committed to Rice. Tulane said the same thing. LSU visited my school and asked me to come to their camp. Texas A&M offered today."

I spoke to Skinner's father this evening and he confirmed the offer. "He got a letter from A&M today with an offer. Coach Sherman called and talked to him too." I asked what he and Josh talked about and he said," I don't know but he told him he's sticking with the Owls."

I called Josh later and he confirmed his plans to stick with the first team to offer him. "I pretty much knew I was going to commit to the Owls when they offered. They've got everything I'm looking for - a great education, it's close to home, and they've got a solid sports program that's on the rise. I had a cousin that played baseball at Rice, so I've been watching them for a while."

I asked Josh how his committment happened. "I talked to Coach Bailiff and he was real excited to hear me commit. He said I was part of the Rice family now. I liked that."

I asked Josh if any of the recent calls and offers made him reconsider his verbal and he said, "No, I'm solid to the Owls."

Skinner plans on playing summer baseball with the Columbia Angels and working out. He said he has no plans to attend any camps, but might attend the Rice football camp.
