Owls Land LB Briggs

Rice Coach Craig Naivar got an outstanding Father's Day gift when he landed one of the top LB recruits in Texas Sunday...

Owl Digest has learned that outstanding LB prospect Trey Briggs of Jersey Village HS in Houston committed to the Owls Sunday.

He is considered the 6th best LB in Texas, and 20th best MLB in the country by Scout. He makes the 4th verbal commit the Owls have received for the 2009 recruiting class. Briggs is rated a 3 star prospect by Scout.com.

Texas Prep Insider's Alan Zepeda: "This is a big time pickup for Rice, he is our # 65 player in the Southwest and the # 6 linebacker in the state. Briggs was out last year so he was off the radar, yet he went to our Under Armour/Scout.com combine in Dallas and wowed us. He is a big-time hitter, a sure tackler and someone who does not need help to finish a tackle off."

Deciding Factors

"The education at Rice was just too hard to pass up. I'm looking at life after football and I know a degree from there is going to put me in a great situation. It came down to me thinking there aren't many schools that could offer (a scholarship) that would make me change my mind about Rice - so I committed."

"The 4-2-5 defense is different than what I'm used to but they told me they like blitzing - and I love to blitz!"

Welcome aboard Trey!
