Who's Next?

With Jon Hodde already committed to the Owls, Rice OL recruiting is off to a great start. The Owls will take 3 OL in the class of 2009, and a couple other great targets are high on the Owls...

Recruiting seems to have picked up a lot of steam in recent days for the Rice Owls. In a period of two weeks the Owls have landed 4 outstanding prospects – Alex Francis, Jon Hodde, Trey Briggs, and Jarek Lancaster – joining Josh Skinner in a talented beginning to the 2009 class.

The Owls are in position to have an outstanding Offensive Line group. Two prospects high on the Owls are Ben Hughes and Bobby Janisch. Hughes is arguably the best Center in the state this year and Janisch is a state Top 100 player in his own right. Janisch had a fantastic spring and has worked hard to keep improving his game. This summer he's participating in Jersey Village's 2 hour-a-day strength, agility, and quickness program. But he doesn't stop at that alone, "I run every night too." Janisch has trimmed his weight to just under 280 pounds. The work has paid off – he ran one of the fastest 40 yard dash times at the June 6th Rice Mini Camp.

The two have suggested that their decisions could be made soon. Hughes has narrowed his choices to Rice and SMU and told Scout.com earlier this week that he could possibly make a decision before week's end. I spoke to Bobby Janisch last night and he too offered some insight on his time line for a decision.

"I've really been thinking about committing to Rice. They are definitely at the top right now. I need to talk to my family and friends a little more about it. Staying in state to play football is definitely important to me."

A Sunday commitment from Jersey Village LB and teammate Trey Briggs certainly doesn't hurt the Owls' chances of landing the big tackle.

"Trey called me before he committed on Sunday. I told him I'm probably going to be right behind him." The two have even discussed being roommates at Rice.

So when will Janisch make the call?

"It could happen in the next few months, if not weeks. I know they (Rice) will only be taking 3 Offensive Linemen, so as soon as they get another (OL) commitment I'm going to commit. If Signing Day was tomorrow I'd be a Rice Owl."

It appears both Hughes and Janisch have no further plans for camps this summer. We'll keep you posted on decisions from both of these outstanding prospects.
