Owls Land Commit # 6

Good news just keeps coming for Coach David Bailiff and his staff. The addition of Caddo Mills' Alex Lowry gives the Owls options at a variety of positions. The East Texas All-Stater has a rare combination of speed and power...

The Rice Football program received some great news tonight when East Texas powerhouse lineman Alex Lowry of Caddo Mills called to announce his committment to Rice.

Once again give credit to the Rice staff for recruiting every square inch of the state. Though he hasn't appeared on many "lists", Lowry is a 6-2 273 lineman that has garnered honors on both sides of the ball. He was a Texas Class 2A 2nd Team All-State selection at Offensive Guard by APSE last season and Lowry could play Center, Offensive Guard, or Noseguard for the Owls.

The Caddo Mills product brings an exceptional combination of power and quickness to the Rice program. He "wowed" Rice coaches at their recent Mini Camp in Arlington by running a 5 flat forty, then turning in a 4.5 second shuttle time.

As impressive as those numbers are, they pale in comparison to his strength numbers. Lowry has - get this - a 440 pound Bench Press and a 740 pound Squat! I had to ask three times - these numbers are accurate! Want more? How about a 365 pound Power Clean. Wow, just wow. Yancy may have to order more weights.

Lowry chose Rice as much for academics as he did football - he's looking to be challenged in the classroom and is at the top of his class at Caddo Mills. Evident in the fact that he's already scored a 1240 on his SAT and boasts a 3.9 G.P.A.

Lowry becomes the 6th verbal commit for the Owls. We'll have more from him tomorrow.

Welcome aboard Alex!
