Brackens Says, "Owls At The Top"

Small private schools rarely turn out D-I prospects, Dallas Parish Episcopal may produce 3 this year, including Andre Brackens…

While Rice has done extremely well in filling recruiting needs along the line of scrimmage this summer they'd sure like to add an impact skill player or two to their 2009 recruiting class. Dallas Parish Episcopal's Andre Brackens is just the kind of player that could have an impact on either side of the ball. No doubt Brackens is a potential difference maker.

Though Brackens has star quality he hasn't appeared on many recruiting "lists". Part of the reason for that though could be that he moved to Dallas from Oceanside, CA. just last July. It didn't take long for him to make a name for himself though.

Colleges from all over the country have noticed Brackens – he's being recruited by Kansas, Boise St., BYU, Georgia Tech, Northwestern and Rice. He's holding offers from Kansas and BYU currently and as you would guess from the list of schools recruiting him he's got outstanding grades. Rice has offered Brackens a scholarship as well. He is an explosive athlete that possesses eye popping strength and speed. He carries 190 pounds on his compact 5-9 frame.

Look further into Andre's numbers and it's easy to see why so many schools have noticed him - he's simply a phenomenal athlete.

First, he's got speed to burn – he's clocked a personal best 4.38 second forty yard dash. Add to that a 41" vertical jump (watch out JD) and a 500 pound Squat and you see why Parish Episcopal Coach Scott Nagy is so excited about Brackens, "the player that has just BLOWN UP at our school is Andre Brackens!" Andre also Power Cleans over 300 pounds.

I asked Andre to describe his game on both sides of the ball:

Offense: "I'm more of a finesse runner than a power back. I'll run over people if I have to but I like to use my speed and quickness to run to daylight. We run the Wing so I get to carry the ball quite a bit."

Uh, just a little. Brackens had 1,139 yards on 113 carries last season for an impressive 10.1 yards per carry average. He scored 24 Touchdowns in 11 games!

Defense: "I'm a ballhawk. I'm always around the ball, I have a nose for it I think – and I love to hit people!"

"Ballhawk" pretty much nails it. Andre had 7 interceptions playing Cornerback last year.

I asked Andre who his favorites were right now and he said, "Rice. They're pretty much at the top. I was supposed to go to their camp up here (in Arlington) but I couldn't make it. I don't know a whole lot about the school yet but I'm going down there for their camp in July and hope to learn a little more. Coach Bailiff and Coach Eliot are recruiting me."

Brackens hopes to major in Computer Graphics or Digital Media. And while he's high on Rice right now he's not quite ready to pull the trigger on a commit right now.

"I'll probably wait and take a few visits before I commit. I need to think it over and talk about it with my family. I need to pray about it."

We're praying too Andre…
