Thursday Tidbits

Wow, in less than 30 days Rice will play its first game of the season - that'll be August 29th against new coach June Jones' SMU Ponies. With recruiting slowing down, talk of the season picks up...

In late May I don't think anyone would believe Rice would have the most committed recruits by number in C-USA right now - they do though, with 15 verbals. Of course Rice will lose that lead at some point because the class is 95% completed and the Owls have but one or two scholarships left to give. Nevertheless, when the commits started rolling in, Rice was white hot over an 8 week stretch through June and July.

Football season never goes away here at Owl Digest but the actual 2008 season is right around the corner. Hopefully you're checking out our "Position Battle" features highlighting the players competing for starting spots on the 2008 team. Overall, a sign of improvement for any team is competition for starting positions - and this year the Owls have more contested spots heading into August than they've had in years. Hopefully that will translate into winning more games in 2008.

Speaking of August, Saturday August 2nd, marks the beginning of practices for the 2008 Rice Owl Football team. The Owls are expecting the full 105 man roster limit when things kick off this weekend. The Owls will be in shorts and helmets for 2 days before donning shoulder pads next week. Full contact drills begin next Wednesday.
