First Look: Rice vs. Southern Miss

Though Larry Fedora feels he needs more talent to win in Hattiesburg, the first year coach of the Southern Miss Golden Eagles Football Program didn't exactly find the cupboard bare when he arrived…

Long considered one of the premier teams in C-USA, the University of Southern Mississippi has seemingly always had talented players on its roster. From Brett Favre to Adalius Thomas, the Golden Eagle program has generated several NFL stars.

This year's team may not have any first round draft picks – but once gain they do have exceptional players on both sides of the ball. Larry Fedora's first recruiting class also showed there won't be any drop off in the talent level in Hattiesburg. Freshman WR Deandre Brown was the highest rated recruit to ever sign with USM.

Here's a look at the USM lineup…

WR 5 DeAndre Brown, 6-6 230

LT 72 Calvin Wilson, 6-6 353

LG 69 Micah Brown, 6-2 287

C 59 Cameron Zipp, 6-1 297

RG 71 Ryan Hebert, 6-5 310

RT 66 Ryan McKee, 6-6 291

TE 1 Shawn Nelson, 6-5 240

FL 86 Gerald Baptiste, 6-0 185

WR 80 Torris Magee, 6-2 214

QB 12 Austin Davis, 6-2 207

RB 25 Damion Fletcher, 5-10 180

Quarterback Austin Davis is a Redshirt Freshman and has had predictable bouts with inconsistency this year. RB Damion Fletcher runs "big" for his size, and already has rushed for 772 yards this season. Deandre Brown is a freak of an athlete – he was rated the #3 WR in the country last year out of Ocean Springs (MS) High School. Brown is 6-6 230 pounds and runs 4.4 in the forty yard dash.

DE 90 Terrance Pope, 6-3 275

NT 92 Eric Phillips, 6-7 290

DT 93 Logan Hickman, 6-3 245

ROCK 45 Roshaad Byrd, 6-3 247

WLB 41 Takumbo Abanikanda, 6-0 224

MLB 24 Gerald McRath, 6-3 220

SLB 32 Martez Smith, 6-0 211

BC 23 Eddie Willingham, 5-10 174

BS 30 Chico Hunter, 6-0 195

FS 18 Eddie Hicks, 6-2 183

FC 20 C.J. Bailey, 5-10 189

Linebacker Gerald McRath is the star of the Southern Miss Defense and leads the team in tackles with 63. He was the pre-season C-USA Defensive Player-of-the-Year and is living up to that billing. McRath will likely play on Sundays next year. Sophomore Defensive Lineman Anthony Gray leads the team in sacks with 4. Cornerback Bailey has two interceptions.
