This year Rice is in the market for a few more good ones as they recruit to fill their 2010 Class.
They have targets all across North America this year, but some right here at home in Houston would satisfy their needs quite nicely.
Here's a handful of Houston area targets that have interest in the Owls...
Zach Bolton - OG/DL, Klein Forest
Bolton is a very talented two-way performer who played mostly Offensive Guard last year. His size (6-2 265),speed (4.85), and nearly 30" vertical make him a very attractive candidate for Defensive Tackle at the next level however. Bolton is already being recruited by BCS schools such as Alabama, Arkansas, and Texas A&M; but along with Klein Forest teammate Cameron Nwosu has sincere interest in Rice. The pair attended Rice's Night of the Iron Owl event together. Bolton could be offered by Rice as early as next week.
Robert Scarpati - DE/DT, Houston Cy-Ridge
Scarpati played Defensive End for Cy-Ridge last year at around 6-3 240 pounds. He's grown to almost 6-4 260 already this spring, so a move inside could be in the works for the Northwest Houston standout. Having played on national television last year, and on the same team with the nation's #1 2009 QB recruit Russell Shepherd, Scarpati has gained plenty of exposure. He's getting attention coast-to-coast from the likes of LSU, Oregon, Kansas State, and Ole Miss. However, Scarpati likes the Owls as he camped at Rice last summer and also attended the "Iron Owl". Like Bolton, I expect Scarpati to be holding a Rice offer very soon.
Kirk Poston - DE/DT, Houston St. Pius X
"Pius" has a ton of talent this year. Rice has already offered Poston's teammate Venric Mark, who is considered an "Athlete" that could play many positions at the next level including Kick Returner and Slot Receiver. Playing opposite Poston, Defensive End Greg Daniels has already committed to the University of Texas. Guard Cody Kaleh and Safety Michael Schrang are also Division I prospects. Poston comes off the ball with great pad level and has played both Tackle and End, his stock is on the rise.
Kevin Kisseberth - OLB/DE/TE, Klein
Klein High School has produced some great football players over the years - the latest is versatile athlete Kevin Kisseberth. With a 4.6 forty and impressive 4.19 second shuttle time, Kisseberth could easily play Linebacker at the next level. Or if he continues to grow as expected, could be a very fast edge pass rusher. Then again, Kisseberth garnered All-District honors at Tight End last year. He's being recruited by Texas A&M, Northwestern, SMU and a host of others. He will have a Rice offer in hand soon.
Chris Mallott - WR/TE/DE, The Woodlands
You've probably noticed the pattern here that like the other players we're spotlighting, Chris Mallott has the potential to play a number of positions in college. Mallott was a WR last year but could H-Back or Tight End also. The Owls like his 4.56 speed and 6-5 215 pound frame at Defensive End.
These are just a few of the many Owl recruiting targets Rice will be focusing on in the coming months. Those these are homegrown, Rice coaches have been very pleased with the level of interest from recruits statewide. Could the Owls be poised to raise the recruiting bar yet again with its 2010 Signing Class? They hope so...
