Thrill of the Catch

Rice has a talented group of young Receivers on campus, but loses two to the NFL this month and graduates three more after the 2009 season. Their Spread Offense is a perfect fit for playmakers looking to get lots of action...

Rice has some talented young guys on campus that are still developing at the Wide Receiver position - but I think the Owls could use a couple more "big play" type guys to complement their growing Offensive arsenal.

Here are a few possibilities for the 2010 Class...

Kevin Johnson - 6-2 195 4.45, Cy-Ridge. Johnson already has a Rice offer and his stock continues to soar - he recently picked one up from Oklahoma State. He is the total package of size, speed, and productivity. Will be a tough commit for Rice to gain, but one of the Owls' most effective recruiters, Craig Naivar, is on the job.

Jordan Leslie - 6-2 195 4.6, Tomball. Leslie made a splash on the Greater Houston stat sheets as a sophomore. He is big and very productive - also knows incoming Rice CB Corey Frazier very well. The only question on Leslie is how fast is he?"

Calvin Thompson - 6-2 200 4.46, Cedar Park Vista Ridge. Thompson is the younger brother of OU Quarterback Paul Thompson. He played Running Back last year in the same backfield with Rice QB signee Taylor McHargue. Has run 21.6 in the 200 meters so he can really fly - competition is extremely tough for him though.

Sheldon McClain - 6-3 185 4.47, Cibolo Steele. McClain is being recruited by all the bigs and has been to A&M (offer) several times already.

Tommy Bowman - 6-2 200 4.5, Abilene Cooper. Doesn't quite get as much attention as some of the other names here but is a very good prospect with excellent size. Bowman made the trip to Houston for Rice's Junior Day with his parents last month and actually looked bigger than his listed size. Runs track for Cooper and is getting regular mail from UCLA and Alabama, where his family is originally from.

Randy Knust - 6-3 190 4.6, Woodlands. Attended Junior Day and is very interested in Rice. Could be close to an offer from Rice and already has one from SMU. Had a good junior season but was hampered with a foot injury. He's a big play guy - averaged over 30 yards per catch last year!

Brent Walters - 5-11 175 4.4, Willis. Has a ton of offers already, including one from Rice. Walters can fly. Also being recruited as a Defensive Back.

Venric Mark - 5-9 166 4.4, Houston St. Pius. Mark is a dynamic return man and already holds offers from Rice and Vanderbilt. Also being recruited as a Corner.
