Scarpati Hitting The Road

Cy-Ridge High School in Northwest Houston has turned out some impressive talent in recent years, including LSU signee Russell Shepherd last year. This year the Rams are loaded again - WR Kevin Johnson, CB Jayell Scott, and DL Robert Scarpati are all getting frequent interest from college recruiters, especially Rice. Scarpati has been to Rice several times but is also checking out other options...

I caught up with Cy-Ridge Defensive Lineman Robert Scarpati Monday evening to discuss his recruitment.

Though he's got a great frame and good measurables - Scarpati is still waiting on his first offer.

For now he is focused on doing the things within his control to not only have a successful senior season, but to also help his team win football games. While any player's recruitment is important, it's secondary to Scarpati at this point.

"I've been working hard in our off-season program. I'm just focused on getting bigger, stronger, and faster. I don't have a whole of control over the recruiting process so I'm channeling my energy towards becoming the best player I can be."

Though the offers haven't arrived yet, Robert has gotten plenty of attention from recruiters.

"I'm getting a lot of mail and interest from Rice, Colorado State, UTEP, and Purdue. Oh, and New Mexico just started sending a lot of stuff and talking to my coach."

Scarpati will no doubt have several options for college before all is said and done, for now it seems most of the teams he's hearing from want to see more from the 6-4 255 pound lineman on the field.

"I've played End and Tackle so I think a lot of schools want to see where to slot me. I'm really concentrating on speed a lot; that's an asset for me. Just about everyone says they want to see me play in spring practice. With KJ (WR Kevin Johnson) and the others here I think there could be 10 to 15 schools at practice next month."

With spring practice just around the corner, Robert has taken the opportunity to make several unofficial recruiting trips this April. Many have been to Rice - including the Iron Owl event, spring practices, and the Owls' Junior Day. He's also travelled to North Texas recently.

"I went to a camp in Fort Worth recently and did pretty well in the one-on-ones. I put my guy on his butt, which is what I'm supposed to do. I also went to the SMU Spring Game."

This weekend Scarpati will take a more lengthy trip - to Colorado. He will take in Colorado State's Spring Game.

"I've been hearing from Colorado State for a while. We're going up this weekend to check things out. The weather should be nice and I want to see the campus. We'll see if they offer while I'm there."

Regardless, Robert will stay quite busy for the coming weeks. He is testing strength and speed at the end of this week as his off-season program wraps up. He said he would give me an update on his numbers from those tests.

He's also currently taking a pre-SAT course. He plans on attending the Houston Combine in May and will also attend a Rice Mini-Camp.

With his size and speed, Scarpati will likely be holding several offers by summer. We'll keep you posted on Scarpati's recruitment right here...
