He's an exciting target that's been on the Owl radar for several weeks now. We mentioned him on Owl Digest a couple weeks ago as a player that was a candidate for a Rice offer.
Rice Coach Craig Naivar offered Muniz on Monday.
He's an extremely athletic prospect that has a great upside - he's currently about 6-6 240 pounds, and runs the 40 in 4.8 seconds. Muniz also sports a vertical leap of over 30". Though he will need to fill out some, he's got all the tools to be a great Offensive Lineman at the next level.
Muniz has a great frame to build upon. He already has a developed lower body, which translates to a solid yet agile base. But in addition, he's got very wide shoulders. It's here that Muniz has a lot of room to grow. He's already putting on size quickly - he's gained about 20 pounds in the last 4 months - and has the potential to fill out into a 6-6 290 pound athletic college lineman with ease.
He was 2nd Team All-District last fall in the ultra-competitive District 15-5A. 1st teamers included Rice signee Bobby Janisch of Jersey Village; Houston signee Keenan Flax who played at Cy-Ridge; and fellow junior Cy-Creek teammate Cameron Fleming, who is a TCU commit.
While the the Owls are the latest to offer, Muniz is hardly a "sleeper". He's also got offers in hand from Mississippi State, Northwestern, and UTEP.
One school sits at the top for Archie though.
That would be the Rice Owls.
"I was really excited about the offer from Rice. I like the idea of my family getting to watch me play here. I'd say I'm mostly likely going to commit after I take my (entrance) exam. Rice is a program on the rise and the education is simply the best. I think it's a great situation for me."
Muniz will take his college entrance exam in early June, so the Owls may not have to wait long. He is an excellent student so things should fall into place for Muniz and the Owls in a few weeks.
Until then, what are Archie's plans?
"I'm just focusing on getting bigger and stronger. I'll probably go to some camps. I'm going to the Rice Camp for sure."
Interestingly, Archie is a twin, though not identical. His brother Ivan is a 6-0 180 pound Cornerback for Cy-Creek. Archie commented on the difference.
"My brother got the speed - I got the size."
We beg to differ though - a 4.8 second 40 yard dash at Archie's size is hardly slow.
We'll keep you posted on Archie's recruitment. Check the Owl's Nest Forums...
