Injury Report: Savage, Martinek, Etc.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Rutgers coach Greg Schiano is uncertain whether quarterback Tom Savage will be available for Friday's Big East opener against Connecticut. The weekly injury report came out, and in addition to Savage, Schiano gives updates on a few other key players, including running back Joe Martinek and tight end Evan Lampert.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Without naming a quarterback for Friday's Big East opener against Connecticut, Rutgers coach Greg Schiano said the health of starter Tom Savage remains in question.

Savage, who injured his throwing (right) hand last week against Tulane, has been limited in practice this week, Schiano said. And it may not be known until just before kickoff whether or not he will be available.

"Tom will be a game-time decision," Schiano said. "I hope that with some help, he'll be able to do some stuff. We'll see. We've got (49) hours before we kick."

If Savage cannot play, or does not start, it means freshman Chas Dodd will get the opportunity against the Huskies on national television (ESPN). Dodd completed 13 of 29 passes for 176 yards, a touchdown and an interception in slightly more than two quarters against the Green Wave.

Martinek ready

Schiano said running back Joe Martinek, who was limited the last two weeks because of an ankle injury, is available after going through the week of practice.

"Joe will play," Schiano said. "I don't know at what percentage he is. I couldn't tell you. He practiced. He's doing well."

Lampert or Ruiz?

Red-shirt junior tight end Fabian Ruiz played a significant role last week against Tulane, mostly because tight end Evan Lampert was dealing with a sprained ankle.

However, Lampert should be available for the Huskies.

"He's not 100 percent, so his role may not be as much," Schiano said. "We'll see. Part of (Ruiz's playing time) was Lampert's ankle wasn't as good."
