Watkins in limbo over Doherty condundrum
Meanwhile, back in Chapel Hill, chaos has reigned. There are meetings about Matt Doherty's future as the UNC coach just about everywhere you look, and just about everybody you can think of is involved in the meetings. Parents and players, parents and parents, players in groups, players individually; everybody is having his and her say. And everyone is wondering who is in charge. Will the athletic director or the chancellor make the final decision? Will the two of them do it together? Will they ask Dean Smith for his opinion?
Not a very pretty picture in terms of cohesion and not the type of endorsement that attracts a prospect to a program. Who knows what Watkins is thinking? This much is sure, though: the other programs that are recruiting the kid are making sure he stays abreast on all the negative things happening with Carolina basketball.
But Doherty might be gone, gone, gone
Speculation and a number of electronic media reports say the school will announce the dismissal of Matt Doherty as head coach after three seasons at the school. There is no official confirmation of that.
Doherty and athletic director Dick Baddour met for several hours Monday night, and Doherty arrived at the Smith Center at 1 p.m. Tuesday dressed in a suit and carrying a briefcase. Baddour left about 45 minutes later.
Doherty, Tar Heels may part ways
