The Scarlet Knights shook off a sluggish start to score 15 straight points and ease to a 63-54 win against Auburn on Saturday in the SEC-Big East Invitational at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh.
It was a homecoming for Rutgers coach Mike Rice, who grew up in the Pittsburgh area and spent three seasons as the head coach at Robert Morris, which is located in suburban Pittsburgh.
The Scarlet Knights (6-2) were led by sophomore wing Dane Mille's 17 points and 10 rebounds while Jonathan Mitchell added 14 points.
Beatty, a senior point guard, had one point in Rutgers' last two games, but his 13 points helped Rutgers to a third straight win.
Auburn (3-5) shot 30.2 percent from the field and was led in scoring by Kenny Gabriel's 18 points.
The Tigers began the game with a 7-0 run and led 11-4 before Rutgers had a field goal.
However, Beatty began a 15-0 run with a 3-pointer from the corner, and a 3-pointer from Miller gave the Scarlet Knights a 12-11 lead with 11:42 left in the first half, and Rutgers never trailed again.
The Scarlet Knights build their lead to 51-34 on a 3-pointer from Mitchell with 5:22 to play. Coupled with last month's win against Miami, Rutgers has two non-conference wins against BCS conference schools in the season for the first time since 2003-04.
