Stock Report: Rutgers' Defensive Targets

The recruiting period is slowing down with dead arriving, so decided the opportunity was perfect to unveil its first "Stock Report" as the 2011 hits the home stretch. The second part of the first installment involves the Scarlet Knights' primary targets on defense. will be issuing a stock report on a need-to-update basis on the offensive and defensive recruits Rutgers is targeting for the 2011 class.

Part II of the first installment is based on the defensive targets remaining high on Rutgers' board:

Player: Sheldon Royster
School: St. Peter's Prep (Jersey City, N.J.)
Position: Safety
Schools: Rutgers, South Carolina, North Carolina, Michigan
Decision timeline: Mid to late January
Stock report: Royster plays as a New Jersey power whittled his choices to a quartet of schools, but still is a big under-the-radar because he plays on the same team as five-star running back Savon Huggins and doesn't conduct interviews frequently.
Still, he is the best safety in the state, and arguably the best defensive player in the state. He reacts quickly, is tough, likes to play near the line of scrimmage and tackles well.
He visited Rutgers earlier this month, and told last week the Scarlet Knights and South Carolina were his favorites, but visits to North Carolina and Michigan are pending. Oh, and he is also one of the top running backs in the state, but didn't carry it much as a senior because of a bad ankle.
Rutgers' chances: Fluctuating, but good right now

Player: Chris Jones
School: Williams M. Raines High (Jacksonville)
Position: Defensive tackle
Schools: Rutgers, North Carolina, Miami, Boise State, Alabama, Ole Miss, Auburn.
Decision timeline: Signing day
Stock report: first brought the 6-foot-5, 265 pounder to folks' attention in September, and his interest in the Scarlet Knights remains strong. He is planning and official visit at the end of January, which means Rutgers will have the last chance at him before signing day.
He is a strong, motivated, grind-it-out player who is being looked at by an eclectic mix of schools from various regions. He is still looking for an offer from some of his favorites, but holds them from Rutgers, North Carolina and Miami.
Working in Rutgers' favor is he grew up in Harlem (N.Y.), is familiar with the program and has family in New York and New Jersey.
Rutgers' chances: Solid, but not great

Player: Ramik Wilson
School: Jefferson High (Tampa)
Position: Linebacker
Schools: Rutgers, Texas Tech, Purdue, Georgia
Decision timeline: Signing day
Stock report: He was the most dominating player in the Jefferson's win in the class 3A final over the weekend, and he brings size (6-2, 220) to the position and can play outside or middle linebacker. He is quick, reads the play well and physical.
His visit parade begins in January with a trek to Georgia, which will be his first of four officials. He is set to travel to Rutgers the weekend of Jan. 21-23, and will meet up with former high school teammate Fred Overstreet, a freshman at Rutgers.
Wilson has not talked much recruiting since early in the season, and is remaining quiet these days, but the Scarlet Knights sit firmly entrenched in the process.
Rutgers' chances: As good as any other school

Player: Chad Hannah
School: Gaither High (Tampa)
Position: Defensive end
Schools: North Carolina State, Rutgers, Cincinnati, Illinois, South Florida
Decision timeline: Undetermined
Stock report: Hannah was a quick riser in the 2010 season after not playing as a junior. He brings size (6-4, 230) and speed off the edge, and but also lacks experience.
The Scarlet Knights got on him early, but they were not alone and he became one of the under-the-radar recruits to go above the radar pretty quickly.
He already visited Cincinnati and Rutgers, which cooled on him after the visit. He will visit N.C. State in mid January, and the Wolfpack are pursuing him the hardest.
Rutgers' chances: Wolfpack are in good position

Player: Kyshoen Jarrett
School: East Stroudsburg (Pa.) High
Position: Cornerback
Schools: Virginia Tech, Illinois, Pittsburgh, Rutgers
Decision timeline: Mid to late January
Stock report: Jarrett was high on Rutgers in the spring, but never got an offer because of a slow 40-yard dash time after his sophomore year. He never made it back to Rutgers to run after his junior year, and that meant no offer was coming his way.
He is a soft commit to Pittsburgh, and will visit there Jan. 14. He also will visit Virginia Tech (Jan. 21) and Illinois (Jan. 28), which leaves no weekends to trip to Rutgers. In other words, he will have to change his schedule to visit Rutgers before signing day.
Rutgers' chances: It will take a big rally, that is, if Rutgers tries to stage one

Player: Antavius Sims
School: Ventura (Calif.) College
Position: Defensive back
Schools: Rutgers, Washington, Mississippi, UTEP, Florida International
Decision timeline: Undetermined
Stock report: Sims is an interesting prospect because he plays quarterback and is a tremendous athlete, but is being recruited to play in the secondary. FIU is the only school to offer him.
Rutgers' chances: If the Scarlet Knights want him, they stand a great chance
