Now, Belton is de-committed, Hafley is at Rutgers, and the recruiting process is alive and well again for the 5-foot-10, 190-pounder.
The Scarlet Knights' newest assistant has reached out to Belton to see if there is any interest on his part in checking out the in-state school again.
"We have a very good relationship, and I talked to him the other day and he was telling me about his situation, and he's on board with Rutgers now," Belton said of Hafley. "We haven't talked much since then. I'm not too sure what that does for me. I really haven't thought about it that much, so I can't give you a lot of information on that."
Belton acknowledged Hafley's presence at Rutgers puts the Scarlet Knights in his mind, but he isn't sure how deep.
"Right now, I have these three schools I'm focusing on, and they are the only three schools I'm looking at right now," he said. "If something we're to change, I will let you know, but I'm focusing on these three schools."
With recruiting in the dead period, it gives Belton time to consider his options. He has not set up any official visits, and would not be able to make an official visit to Rutgers before Jan. 21-23, which is the first weekend after the beginning of the second semester.
As a senior, Belton completed 148 of 241 passes for 2,167 yards, 21 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also rushed for 1,003 yards.
