Netwhispers on Hoops

C.J. Pigford a 6'7" combination forward signed a basketball letter of intent to attend Virginia Tech in November of 2000 but when things didn't workout, this North Carolina native followed the advice of Horace Greeley and went West.  Pigford who is attending Lon Morris College, Jacksonville, Texas, appeared on campus in Jacksonville with minimal fanfare but has since exploded on the court to garner several major Division I offers.

This North Carolinian was selected to the first team all league of  the Texas Eastern Basketball Conference. He was the go to guy for the Lon Morris Bearcats this past year. Three of his classmates at Lon Morris have already signed on with major Divison One programs.   This year the Bearcats finished with a 25-9 record and were rated as high as number three in the National Junior College Poll. They were eliminated in the regional semifinals.

Pigford averaged 18.2 points per game while shooting 61.3 percent from the field.  He shot 37.8 from behind the arc while hitting 14 of 37 attempts and was good for 70 percent from the line.  He also grabbed 7.1 rebounds as he switched between the power and small forward positions.  He can defend inside or out but needs to improve his ball handling skills if he wants to just play the 3 position at the next level.

This East Arcadia, North Carolina, product prepped for one year at Hargrave Military Academy where he teamed up with current Rutgers star, Ricky Shields.  While at East Columbus High School in Arcadia, he was selected to the first team Class 2A All State Team.

 C. J.  must receive an Associates Degree from Lon Morris in order to be eligible to play next year under the complex NCAA 4-2-4 ruling.  This ruling states that a student-athlete that begins his or her career at a four-year institution and transfers to a two-year institution must obtain a degree from the two year institution before being eligible to play at a four year school.

Rutgers is among a bevy of schools recruiting this rising star.  Charlotte and University of Mississippi are the main competitors for C. J.  Indiana has also shown some recent interest.  Texas Tech and Washington State pursued C.J. during the early period.
