Stock Report: Rutgers' Offensive Targets

There were de-commitments from schools in the northeast, head coaching changes at other schools and assistant coaching changes at Rutgers. Lots went on behidn the scenes, so decided the opportunity was perfect to unveil another "Stock Report" four weeks before signing day. will be issuing a stock report on a need-to-update basis on the offensive and defensive recruits Rutgers is targeting for the 2011 class.

This installment is for the offensive targets remaining high on Rutgers' board:

Player: Savon Huggins
School: St. Peter's Prep (Jersey City, N.J.
Position:Running back
Schools: Rutgers, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Auburn, USC
Decision timeline: Jan. 28
Stock report: The hiring of Frank Cignetti only helped the situation because Huggins was concerned about the direction of Rutgers' offense in 2010. Cignetti is a person who already detailed, in person, how he would use Huggins when he was the offensive coordinator at Pittsburgh.
Now in the same position at Rutgers, Huggins knows where he stands with Cignetti, and that he will be a focal point of the offense.
He will visit Michigan State the weekend of Jan. 14, and head to Rutgers for his long-awaited official visit the following weekend. Coach Greg Schiano has been the point man throughout this recruitment, and will get the last crack at him when the Scarlet Knights host his last visit.
Rutgers' chances: Very good

Player: Gary Nova
School: Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, N.J.)
Position: Quarterback
Schools: Rutgers, North Carolina, Miami, Virginia
Decision timeline: Late January/Signing day
Stock report: Rutgers commit Miles Shuler has been working Nova hard since his de-commitment from Pittsburgh, and the hiring of Cignetti bodes very well for the Scarlet Knights.
The biggest concern as it pertains to Rutgers is whether or not Miami offers. Nova grew up a big Hurricanes fan, and has talked about Miami from the infancy of his recruitment.
However, Rutgers had a fantastic 1-2 punch by hiring former Pittsburgh assistant Jeff Hafley and then bringing on Cignetti, who clicks with Nova.
Rutgers' chances: Slightly above average

Player: Tanner McEvoy
School: Bergen Catholic (Oradell, N.J.)
Position: Quarterback
Schools: Rutgers, North Carolina, South Carolina, Michigan
Decision timeline: Late January
Stock report: Schools are pulling back a bit on the 6-foot-6 quarterback, and his recruitment is in question at several schools. He is set to visit North Carolina this weekend, and has a tentative visit set for Rutgers the following weekend.
He wants to enter school as a quarterback, but his athleticism and ability to catch and run with the ball makes him an intriguing option at receiver.
Rutgers' chances: Slight to moderate.

Player: Andre Davis
School: Jefferson (Tampa)
Position: Receiver
Schools: South Florida, Rutgers, Arkansas, Texas Tech
Decision timeline: Late January/Signing day
Stock report: With the commitment of Long Branch (N.J.) High's Miles Shuler, Davis doesn't seem to be as much of a priority as he was when the first stock report came out last month.
He didn't perform well in the playoffs for Jefferson, and schools have begun to take his recruiting down a notch. He has visits lined up for South Florida (Jan. 14) and Rutgers (Jan. 21), and could get to Texas Tech later in the month as well.
Rutgers' chances: Something will have to change for him to be a Scarlet Knight.

Player: Shilique Calhoun
School: Middletown (N.J.) North
Position: Tight end
Schools: Rutgers, West Virginia, Michigan State, Pittsburgh, Syracuse
Decision timeline: Undetermined, but soon
Stock report: The hiring of assistant Jeff Hafley has done wonders for the Scarlet Knights in this recruitment. Calhoun was leaning hard toward Pittsburgh, then Michigan State, but Rutgers has recruited the 6-5, 230-pounder hard lately. And the charge is being led Hafley who joined the Rutgers staff a few weeks ago.
Calhoun is incredibly athletic, and could develop into the tight end new offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti loves to utilize in his pro-style offense. When Calhoun didn't announce before the holidays, which was originally planned, it bodes well for the Scarlet Knights.
Rutgers' chances: Average but rising

Player: Jack Tabb
School: Red Bank (N.J.) Catholic
Position: Tight end
Schools: Arkansas, Florida, Wisconsin, Michigan, North Carolina, Rutgers
Decision timeline: Uncertain
Stock report: Tabb recently told Rutgers is no longer in the picture.
Rutgers' chances: A smidge above nil

Player: Kaleb Johnson
School: Edward H. White (Jacksonville)
Position: Offensive lineman
Schools: Rutgers, North Carolina, Louisville, Miami
Decision timeline: Signing day
Stock report: With former Temple coach Al Golden now in Coral Gables, Fla., Miami is making a strong push in New Jersey. However, the ‘Canes are still formidable in Florida as well, and they are making a push for Johnson.
An offer has not come his way, but it could come soon. If that happens, the Hurricanes immediately become the leader, and everyone else plays catch-up. Rutgers coach Greg Schiano has an in-home visit scheduled for late in the month, and Edward H. White coach Terry Gilliam has a very good relationship with the Rutgers staff.
Johnson has a visit to Louisville set (Jan.14), and that Miami is yet to offer or talk about an official visit after being at his school this week is strange, but that could change quickly.
Rutgers' chances: Average

Player: Josue Matias
School: Union (N.J.)
Position: Offensive line
Schools: North Carolina, Rutgers, Wisconsin, South Carolina, Florida State
Decision timeline: Late January
Stock report: It was extremely huge when Matias told he would take his visit to Rutgers (Jan. 21) rather than take one to Miami. It means the Scarlet Knights have a chance to get him on campus and rekindle the relationship that had him favoring Rutgers heavily in the spring …before so many other schools jumped in.
It could come down to whether Matias is ready to leave home, but Rutgers has two of the best selling points; closeness to family and immediate playing time.
Rutgers' chances: Below average but increasing

Player: Rashad Hill
School: Edward H. White
Position: Offensive line
Schools: Rutgers, Louisville, Southern Miss, Louisiana Tech, Pittsburgh
Decision timeline: Late January
Stock report: He is being kept warm in the process and remains on the radar because of his size (6-6, 270) and lack of experience (he only played one season after playing basketball), which makes him a bit of a project. But it also may be a project worth taking on because of his upside and ability to develop quickly.
Rutgers' chances: If Rutgers offers, chances are very good

Player: Bill Belton
School: Winslow Township (Atco, N.J.)
Position: Receiver
Schools: Cincinnati, West Virginia, Penn State, Rutgers
Decision timeline: Signing day
Stock report: Belton never really felt Rutgers before committing to Pittsburgh, but with Hafley now on the Scarlet Knights staff, there is a positive connection. He still isn't giving Rutgers much consideration and doesn't have a visit planned, so that is an issue.
Rutgers' chances: Very low

Player: Ryan Malleck
School: Point Boro (Point Pleasant, N.J.)
Position: Tight end
Schools: Rutgers, Vanderbilt, Maryland, Nebraska, Connecticut
Decision timeline: Undecided
Stock report: Malleck is a soft commit to Maryland, but that could change since spread offense coach Mike Leach did not get the head coaching job and meat-and-potatoes offensive philosophy coach Randy Edsall left UConn for the Terps.
Malleck liked the offensive staff at Maryland, and they moved to Vandy. He liked Edsall at UConn, and now can play for him at the school he initially chose.
Malleck may take some visits, including one to Rutgers the weekend of Jan. 21, but the Scarlet Knights were not his top pick in the summer, and not a lot may have changed because of how other coaching staffs shook out.
Rutgers' chances: Slight to moderate.

Player: Fou Fonoti
School: Cerriots College (Norwalk, Calif.)
Position: Offensive tackle
Schools: UCLA, Michigan State, Rutgers, Arizona
Decision timeline: Undecided
Stock report: He already made trips to Michigan State and Arizona and ones planned to UCLA (Jan. 14) and Rutgers (Jan. 21) before he makes a decision. His process remains wide open, but his willingness to travel east to see what Rutgers is all about is a positive for the Scarlet Knights.
Rutgers' chances: Average.
