Stock Report: Rutgers' Defensive Targets

There were de-commitments from schools in the northeast, head coaching changes at other schools and assistant coaching changes at Rutgers. Lots went on behind the scenes, so decided the opportunity was perfect to unveil another "Stock Report" four weeks before signing day. Check out the defensive stock report for Rutgers' high-target prospects. will be issuing a stock report on a need-to-update basis on the offensive and defensive recruits Rutgers is targeting for the 2011 class.

Part II of the second installment is based on the defensive targets remaining high on Rutgers' board:

Player: Sheldon Royster
School: St. Peter's Prep (Jersey City, N.J.)
Position: Safety
Schools: Rutgers, South Carolina, North Carolina
Decision timeline: Undetermined
Stock report: Word spread at the Chesapeake Bowl that Royster was closing in on a commitment to South Carolina, but it never materialized.
For a long time Royster talked about whether he wanted to leave home, but over the last few months said the chance of that happening was gaining steam. He is the only safety Rutgers is actively recruiting, and the longer it goes the better it seems to be for the Scarlet Knights.
His visit to Michigan was cancelled after the coaching change, but was told Thursday afternoon he will still make his visit to North Carolina next weekend (Jan.14).
Rutgers' chances: Solid

Player: Chris Jones
School: Williams M. Raines High (Jacksonville)
Position: Defensive tackle
Schools: Rutgers, North Carolina, Miami, Boise State, Alabama, Ole Miss, Auburn.
Decision timeline: Signing day
Stock report: Jones can play on both sides of the ball, but wants to play defensive end. His recruitment has been up-and-down, and right now Rutgers has cooled significantly on him. Almost to the point the Scarlet Knights are no longer in contact.
Rutgers' chances: Not good, but by Rutgers' choice

Player: Ramik Wilson
School: Jefferson High (Tampa)
Position: Linebacker
Schools: Rutgers, Texas Tech, Purdue, Georgia, Miami
Decision timeline: Signing day
Stock report: One of the top outside linebackers on the board, Wilson is hard to read because he is no longer doing interviews about his recruitment.
He begins his visit schedule this weekend at Georgia, but will make visit to Rutgers on Jan. 21. Between that he will also visit Texas Tech. His fourth visit is set for Purdue the weekend before signing day, but Miami is making a charge and could get a final visit.
From talking to folks close to Wilson, Georgia may be difficult to beat. But Wilson's teammate and close friend, Fred Overstreet, is a linebacker at Rutgers and is selling the Scarlet Knights hard to him.
Rutgers' chances: Sliding, but not over

Player: Chad Hannah
School: Gaither High (Tampa)
Position: Defensive end
Schools: North Carolina State, Rutgers, Cincinnati, Illinois, South Florida
Decision timeline: Undetermined
Stock report: Hannah is a perfect example of the volatility of the recruiting stock report this time of year. He went from no offers during the season to double digits, but now is starting to slide as schools try to decide whether he has the frame to add the requisite weight needed to play in college.
He visited Rutgers, but hasn't done interviews since then. North Carolina State remains the odds-on favorite.
Rutgers' chances: Recruiting of Hannah has stopped

Player: Lafayette Pitts
School: Woodland Hills (Pittsburgh)
Position: Cornerback
Schools: Rutgers, Pittsburgh, Maryland, Iowa
Decision timeline: Late January/Signing day
Stock report: The Pittsburgh "soft" commit is looking around to see what else is available, and could very well wind up with the Scarlet Knights. He already visited Iowa and will trip to Maryland, Rutgers and possibly Pittsburgh.
Pitts is a very good cover cornerback, and brings tremendous speed to the position. If Rutgers could get him, it could open the western Pennsylvania market to the Scarlet Knights.
Rutgers' chances: Rutgers is in a good position, but changes could come quickly

Player: Marquise Wright
School: Paramus (N.J.) Catholic
Position: Defensive tackle
Schools: Rutgers, Pittsburgh, Miami, Michigan State, Maryland
Decision timeline: Late January/Signing day
Stock report: It seems like everyone is a former Pittsburgh commit these days, and Wright is on that list. He hasn't had much contact with Rutgers, but has long preferred the home school.
The Scarlet Knights may bring him in for an official visit, but it is yet to be fully organized yet.
Rutgers' chances: If Rutgers offers quickly, the chance are high
