Whitaker will enter Rutgers as a non-scholarship preferred walk-on.
"I committed to coach Schiano this morning," Whitaker said. "It's exciting."
Whitaker was deciding between walking on at Boise State and Rutgers, but was leaning heavily toward the Scarlet Knights.
His visit to Rutgers solidified his decision.
"It's just the family atmosphere coach schiano builds," he said. "It's not just what was written on the walls about being a family, but the way they work with each other.
"A lot of people don't undestand about Schiano is the way he runs the team. He really does things the right way. The APR (Academic Progress Rate) and the commitment they have to each student. They want to see you graudate."
Whitaker was hosted by walk-on offensive lineman Bryan Leoni, who was able to share the experience of being a non-scholarship player with the Scarlet Knights.
"He told me that I wouldn't be treated any different than anyone else," Whitaker said. "It's really a place you want to be, because you're given a chance to work your way up."
Whitaker spent a lot of time speaking with linebackers coach Bob Fraser, and talking about his future school.
"We met with coach Schiano (this) morning and he aksed if we had any questions, and we didn't," Whitaker said. "Every single thing was covered."
