QB Savage Cleared for Florida, Miami Transfer

Former Rutgers quarterback Tom Savage had his appeal to seek a transfer to Florida and Miami denied by the University Monday, but coach Greg Schiano still opted to clear Savage to speak to those two schools. Schiano explained his decision, and why he changed his mind.

Former Rutgers quarterback Tom Savage lost his University appeal Monday to pursue a transfer to Miami or Florida, but Scarlet Knights coach Greg Schiano will still allow him to.

Schiano originally blocked Savage from speaking to Miami and Florida, but following a lengthy discussion made the decision to clear him for both schools.

"Even though the committee denied his appeal, I told him it would be ok if he wanted to contact Florida or Miami," Schiano said. "Tom's been a great member of this program, of this family, for two years, and listening to all his reasoning, I just thought that was the right thing to do.

"So, that's where it is right now. I don't know where it's going to wind up, but I did give him permission to be contacted by those two schools."

The case was heard by a three-member appeals committee, which consists of Rutgers professors. Schiano said the changed stance came after a lengthy one-on-one conversation with Savage.

"He has family in Florida, and really (has a) desire to have a fresh start out of this immediate area," Schiano said. "Tom's been a great member of this family. I wish that he was remaining with us …but I just feel it's the right thing to do.

"Tom has done everything right for us. He's never given me any issues. He's always been an unselfish teammate. Really, we have a great relationship."

Savage did not return a phone call seeking comment.

He is taking the semester off to decide on a school to transfer to. It is possible he could return to Rutgers, but it is highly unlikely.

"I don't know if it is zero (chance), but I don't think it's pretty high," Schiano said. "He just feels like he wants to get a fresh start."

Savage was the starter in 2009 and began the 2010 season as the Scarlet Knights' starter. He injured his hand Oct. 2 against Tulane and missed two weeks, but never regained his starting position.

He announced earlier this month he was transferring from Rutgers.
