Everyone knows the stars, but what about the guys who don't get the glory? Or even get on the field come game day?
Well, today you get to learn about one of those players.
Walk-on offensive lineman Hugh Ahern is the subject of today's profile:
2011 Eligibility: Red-shirt freshman
Ht.: 6-7 Wt: 315
Position: Offensive tackle
High school: The Peddie School
Background: Didn't begin playing football until his junior year of high school, when he was at Hudson Catholic High. …Played right tackle as the Hawks went 16-6 in two seasons. …Spent a year as a post-graduate at The Peddie School, where he played left guard and nose tackle for the Falcons. …Averaged 10 points and 10 rebounds as a senior playing basketball at Hudson Catholic.
Projected 2011 Role: Ahern is a walk-on who was worth taking a chance on because of his size and the athleticism he displayed in playing football and basketball. He spent 2010 working on the scout team offense.
When spring practice begins, Ahern will be fighting for reps and prove he can be part of the depth on the offensive line. He needed to develop strength and better technique, and isn't expected to factor in the season, but his path of development needs to continue.
