Know the Knights: Johnathan Aiken

Spring practice begins March 29, and each day leading up to it will unveil another player in the "Know the Knights" feature. Today's profile piece is on freshman cornerback Johnathan Aiken, who spring a few special attributes to campus.

Today's installment "Know the Knights" is a player who is on pace to make debut in 2011, but is already enrolled in classes.

Freshman cornerback Johnathan Aiken was a special teams wonder in the one season he played high school football, and showcased his skills during a wonderful performance camping at Rutgers.

High school: Dillard High (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.)
Background: Only played one year of high school football, which came in 2009 at Chaminade Madonna High (Hollywood, Fla.). Made 95 tackles and blocked six kicks for Chaminade. …Excellent cover corner who plays physical at the line of scrimmage and excels in tight coverage down the field. …Was's No. 64 cornerback in the class. …Transferred to Dillard High for the fall semester. …Committed to Rutgers on an official visit in early October.

Projected 2011 Role: Aiken enrolled at Rutgers in January and is scheduled to participate in spring practice. He will compete for a starting cornerback spot, and also has a tremendous knack for blocking kicks on special teams, which should allow him to excel under Scarlet Knights special teams coach Robb Smith.
He is aggressive and did a superb job against Rutgers signee Miles Shuler during the Scarlet Knights' camp in June, and was the best cornerback on the field during the event.
It is always asking a lot for a freshman to play, and especially at cornerback where technique is ultra-important, but Aiken could have a chance because of his early enrollment.
