Know the Knights: Taj Alexander

Spring practice begins March 29, and each day leading up to it will unveil another player in the "Know the Knights" feature. Today's profile piece is on red-shirt freshman defensive lineman Taj Alexander.

Taj Alexander came onto the recruiting scene quickly during the 2009 season, and was courted by Rutgers and committed soon after. He is from Downingtown East High (Exton, Pa.), which also produced tight end and Rutgers signee Tyler Kroft.

Alexander is the latest profile in's "Know the Knights" series.

Here is the breakdown of Alexander:

Taj Alexander

2011 Eligibility: Red-shirt freshman
Ht.: 6-4 Wt: 295
Position: Defensive tackle
High school: Downingtown East High (Exton, Pa.)
Background: Made 56 tackles, including 24 for loss, as a senior with the Cougars. Also had a school-record 17 sacks while playing defensive tackle. …Played in the Big 33 all-star game in June and was a second-team Class AAAA all-star pick. …Recovered six fumbles as a senior. …Was an honorable mention All-EasterPAFootball selection as an offensive lineman.

Projected 2011 Role: Alexander came to Rutgers with the option of playing offensive or defensive line, and started out on the defensive line. He was a member of the scout team last season while working on his technique and gaining strength.
Alexander's future may still be on the offensive line, particularly playing either left guard or right guard.
However, he remains on the defensive now, and if he stays there for spring practice, will have to battle a number of players to find a slot on the depth chart.
