THIS, THAT AND THE OTHER

Netwhispers On Hoops

This Wednesday is the start of the spring signing period for college basketball and that means crunch time. The old adage that no news is good news doesn't necessarily hold here. Rutgers has two good ones in the bank and are waiting and hoping for three more.

Quincy Douby and Marquis Webb both signed binding letters of intent for admission to Rutgers for July 2004. All indications are that both Douby and Webb are fully qualified.

These are both players that should and will contribute immediately to the program.

Rutgers has three more scholarships to give. One is allegedly slated for New York center Shagari Alleyne who vowed to the New Jersey press after the St. John's game at Madison Square Garden less than eight weeks ago that he would be playing for the Scarlet Knights next year.

One is allegedly slated for a yet to be named point guard.  The leading candidate for this scholarship is allegedly Virginia All State selection, A. B. Walker. He will decide between Rutgers and a local Virginia school. This decision is expected any day.

The third scholarship will allegedly go to another insider. There are several players in contention for this scholarship. The players range from a high school All American like Mookie Watkins to Junior College stars like C. J. Pigford and Anthony Lalor. There is also the mystery foreign recruit to contend with. For all you letter writers and Doubting Thomas' out there I can tell you that my Foreign Player Expert tells me that there really is a foreign player that Rutgers has been following.

Expect Rutgers to bring in a minimum of three or four more players into the program this year. Don't expect to have this completed in the next week or so. Every indication I have received from people I have spoken with is that this will take several weeks to finalize.

The one thing I am sure of is that this class will be better than the last class.  I'm not sure of the final names or the final positions of each player but I think in the end there will be 5 or 6 new faces on next year's squad that will see considerable playing time.
