After making his second unofficial visit to Rutgers in nine days recently, the 6-foot-5, 235-pound Giacone is beginning to talk timelines for trimming his list and making a decision. He holds offers from Rutgers, Indiana, UCF and Connecticut.
"Once May is over I'm going to start narrowing it down, maybe to my top five or top three," Giacone said. "Once I get that list down, I'll (announce it). Then, I'm going to try and visit those schools, and from there make a commitment from preseason."
The philosophy is to wait until after the spring evaluation period ends and see which other schools either offer, or show increased interest. He acknowledged having an idea of a few schools to make his initial cut, but he was not prepared to release it.
But one of the schools recruiting Giacone for a while is Rutgers, which offered during an April 21 visit to campus. He returned against for the spring game, and one of the things he noticed was how the Scarlet Knights used the tight end under first-year offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti. Tight ends made six catches in the spring game.
"I watched the game and the team was looking good," Giacone said. "I can see where they use the tight ends now. They didn't use them a lot, but it's definitely an improvement from last year and I think they're going to be a success in the offense this year."
Giacone drove down to Rutgers with class of 2012 St. Peter's Prep receiver J.R. Robinson and class of 2013 standouts Tre Bell and Charlie Callinan. He also spent time speaking with assistant coaches Jeff Hafley and Brian Angelichio before heading to see coach Greg Schiano.
"We got brought up to coach Schiano's office and we got to talk," Giacone said. "It was more just shootin' the breeze. It was definitely to keep building our relationship. I like coach Schiano a lot. Him and I have a really good connection. I feel that with all the coaches there."
