Recruiting Reset: The Backfield

The spring evaluation period is winding down and the camp circuit is about to hit overdrive. So views it as the perfect time for its "Recruiting Reset" package. After beginning with the offensive line targets, next on the list is the backfield.

It is only late May, and Rutgers' backfield recruiting may be finished …at least when it comes to scholarship players.

The commitment of Bloomsburg (Pa.) High quarterback Blake Rankin, who was the Scarlet Knights' top target, means Rutgers is no longer in the market for quarterback since the plan is to take one in this class after signing Gary Nova and Mike Bimonte in February.

And, with the commitment of Archbishop Wood High (Warminster, Pa.) running back Desmon Peoples, the Scarlet Knights have pulled back dramatically on recruiting another running back after bringing in three (Savon Huggins, Ben Martin and Paul Canevari) in the 2011 class.

In fact, the only running back saying he hears regularly from the Scarlet Knights is four-star Downingtown East High's (Exton, Pa.) Drew Harris, and he is showing interest back.

Fullback is the other spot in the backfield Rutgers continues to recruit, but an offer has not been extended to one, and it is a position that most schools traditionally fill with a walk-on.

Still, given Rutgers' move to a pro-style offense, the decision to recruit a fullback shows the commitment it has to the position.

During the spring, Rob Dvoracek of Parkland High (Allentown, Pa.) and Matt Barnett of Paul VI (Haddonfield) both visited and are receiving strong interest from the Scarlet Knights.

Among the others on the fullback list are Grant Behmke of Conestoga High (Berwyn, Pa.), Chris Donald of Red Bank (N.J.) Catholic High, Kevin Meldes of Eastridge High (Rochester, N.Y.) and Stephon Toomer of Liberty High (Bethlehem, Pa.).
