Moments ago during a ceremony at his home, St. Peter's Prep (Jersey City, N.J.) three-star tight end Michael Giacone announced he will attend Rutgers, choosing the Scarlet Knights over Connecticut, Boston College and Maryland.
The 6-foot-5, 235-pound Giacone is the 11th member of the class, and is evidence of big shift in Rutgers' ability to recruit at a few of the top schools in the state.
Before offensive tackle Keith Lumpkin committed to Rutgers 10 months ago, Scarlet Knights coach Greg Schiano had not landed a player from the talent-rich program.
Lumpkin's commitment was followed by five-star running back Savon Huggins choosing the Scarlet Knights in January. Both are freshmen at Rutgers, and Giacone's decision comes two weeks after he spent two days on the Rutgers campus, including considerable time with Huggins.
Giacone is athletic and strong. He was used primarily as a blocker by St. Peter's Prep last season because of the presence of Huggins, but is expected to be a vital part of the passing game this fall.
