Next Piscataway Star Talks Rutgers

SOMERVILLE, N.J. — Junior Nadir Barnwell will start at quarterback and defensive back for Piscataway High School (Piscataway, N.J.), where he is in position to be a top playmaker in the state. Barnwell holds two verbal scholarship offers and discussed his thoughts on Rutgers.

SOMERVILLE, N.J. — Nadir Barnwell said he felt "great" to receive his first verbal scholarship offer from Rutgers during his sophomore year at Piscataway High School (Piscataway, N.J.).

Barnwell has a strong familiarity with the Scarlet Knights and said he is in constant contact with his home-state university.

"It's home," Barnwell said of Rutgers. "It's down the street from my house. I've been watching them play for years, so it's just great to actually know I could go there."

Playing for Piscataway, Barnwell was a one-year teammate of Rutgers receiver Jawaun Wynn. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound also knows Marvin Booker and Anthony Davis, who graduated from Piscataway in 2007 and 2008 and headed across town to Rutgers.

Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano and assistants P.J. Fleck, Chris Hewttt and Robb Smith all have relationships with Barnwell, he said.

"It's down the street," Barnwell said of Rutgers. "I can go there whenever I want and watch their practices or watch their games and talk to the coaches. It's like nothing. We're cool."

Barnwell said Rutgers is recruiting him as an "athlete" that could play on either side of the ball.

"They want me around the ball," Barnwell said. "They like me on defense and have also mentioned wide receiver. They want me in a position to make plays.

"I feel comfortable with what I'm doing on both sides of the ball. There are obviously things I can always work on, but I like playing QB and playing defense. ... Fatigue is not an issue."

Florida came into the picture for Barnwell by extending its own verbal scholarship offer earlier this year.

"It's amazing to get offers from two top D-1 schools already, it's amazing," Barnwell said. "They don't know where they want me, but they said they like me and it's great to be getting contact from a school like that."

For now, only one other school is in contact with Barnwell.

"Georgia is talking to me, but that's the only new one right now," he said. "It would be great to keep that communication going and turn it into something."
