Bowl Picture: The Latest Rutgers Scenarios

West Virginia plays tonight with BCS hopes on the line against South Florida. Before the Mountaineers kick off and change everything, brings you the latest the Big East bowl picture as it relates to Rutgers.

The Belk Bowl and New Era Pinstripe Bowl remain the two likeliest destinations for Rutgers as the week progresses. The details can change significantly based on the way games play out this weekend, but Rutgers is in an interesting position for the Belk Bowl going into the weekend.

According to Belk Bowl executive director Will Webb, Rutgers is attractive for a bevy of reasons.

"We like Rutgers and we like Coach [Greg] Schiano," Webb said. "I've been to Rutgers many times. It's a passionate fan base."

In addition to expected fan buzz should Rutgers receive a Belk invite, Rutgers has never been to the Charlotte, N.C., based bowl game and has a tradition of traveling well to postseason destinations.

What to Watch

Belk Bowl

West Virginia at South Florida: The Scarlet Knight's best shot at the Belk Bowl is with the Mountaineers going to the BCS. At 4-2 with a loss to Louisville, WVU needs to win tonight and have Cincinnati beat Connecticut Saturday to force a three-way tie-breaker. In the three-team division, West Virginia advances to the BCS based on the highest rankings.

Connecticut at Cincinnati: Cincinnati holds WVU's destiny as well as its own. A win and WVU win puts the Mountaineers in the BCS, but also makes the Bearcats slightly more attractive to the Belk Bowl. Regardless, Rutgers is expected to be a slightly more attractive team to the Belk Bowl than Cincinnati, sources said.

Georgia vs. LSU, SEC Championship Game: Yes, this game can have an effect on Rutgers. Louisville remains a target for the Liberty Bowl, which helps Rutgers in a bid for the Belk. This can only happen if LSU beats Georgia so the Liberty Bowl can bypass a Conference USA team in favor of a Big East team and could opt for conference tri-champ Louisville with a possible matchup against Vanderbilt.

New Era Pinstripe Bowl

West Virginia at South Florida and Connecticut at Cincinnati: For Rutgers to go to the Pinstripe, South Florida and/or Connecticut needs a win. If just the Bearcats win, they go to the BCS and WVU is expected to go to the Belk with Louisville in the Liberty and Rutgers in the Pinstripe. If just Cincinnati loses, or both, then Louisville goes to the BCS, WVU likely gets the Belk and Rutgers goes to the Pinstripe.

Iowa State at Kansas State: Missouri remains a target for the Pinstripe Bowl, but sources said there are other choices. But a second upset of a ranked opponent for Iowa State could put the Cyclones higher on the radar.

Texas at Baylor: Any dreams of Texas coming to the Bronx disappear with a Longhorn upset over Baylor. That upset, however, puts Baylor somewhat in the picture for the Pinstripe, but the bowl organizers would love to get either Texas or Texas A&M into the game.
