Wicomico OLB/DE Hayward Visits Rutgers

Wicomico (Salisbury, Md.) OLB/DE Derrick Hayward made a trip to Rutgers with his coach and teammate for Saturday's spring game. A talented 6-foot-5 athlete out of Maryland, Hayward holds two verbal scholarship offers and updated his recruitment after a Rutgers visit.

Wicomico (Salisbury, Md.) OLB/DE Derrick Hayward continues to get his name out with visits and is looking to build on his two verbal scholarship offers.

Visiting Rutgers last weekend with teammate Dontea Ayres and his head coach, Hayward is now hearing from Rutgers to go along with the two offers he already has.

"Most of the Rutgers coaches were saying they were going to probably get a lot more of my film first and talk to me later," Hayward said. "They like me so far."

Hayward is being recruited at multiple positions and stands at 6-foot-5 and 200 pounds. His Saturday trip to Rutgers was his first to the campus and left a positive impression, he said.

"I really liked watching the game," Hayward said. "All of the coaches seemed pretty intense on the field, but they were really nice and easy to get along with. It was a nice experience."

Hayward goes to the same high school that Rutgers safety Wayne Warren attended. Warren is already recruiting Ayres to Rutgers and is in contact with Hayward as well.

"It was unbelievable just seeing the locker room and seeing Wayne's locker and meeting all the players and things like that," Hayward said. "Watching him play in the game was great."

Hayward's first two verbal offers came from Maryland and Boston College.

"At Maryland, I like the coaches and I'm going there [this] week for a campus tour," he said. "I've been there before and I liked it a lot."

Boston College is a relative unknown, he said, but that he is interested in learning more about the program.

"I haven't visited Boston College, but I plan to in June," he said. "I like the coaches so far, but I don't know a lot about them yet."

Maryland is recruiting Hayward as an outside linebacker and Boston College at defensive end. Rutgers is currently recruiting Hayward as an athlete with the idea of putting him at either spot.

"It doesn't really matter to me," Hayward said. "I like them both. I'll play either position, any position just to play."
