Knights in the Pros

Back in the mid-'60s, in the throes of Vietnam and racial turmoil, it was necessary on occasion to find a respite from the country's edgy mood. One place I'd go was a lovably outdated little gym on the campus of Catholic University. The school's basketball team wasn't a power, but it was a delight to watch. Tom Young was a coach who drove his players -- not as a taskmaster but, literally, as a driver. The school didn't have a team bus, so for most road games he took as many players as would fit in his car; a friend followed in a van with the rest.

Syracuse-bound Ricky Krautman of Ramapo kicked a 20-yard field goal and Joe Flacco connected with James Townsend on an 80-yard touchdown pass as New Jersey held on for a 16-14 win over New York in the sixth annual Governor's Bowl. The victory gave New Jersey a 5-1 lead in the series.
In the first game of the Garden State Football Classic, Anthony Cinelli of Paramus Catholic gained 40 yards on 11 carries and was named the Most Valuable Player for the North squad, but Ryan Brand of Marlboro sent the South team home smiling when he kicked a 37-yard field goal as time expired to give the South a 3-0 victory in the 25th annual North-South game.

On Aug.1, Joakim Noah will fly to the island of St. Barts for three weeks of rest and relaxation with his father, former tennis star Yannick Noah.
There, Noah said he will also "go running on the beach and work out" with his father, who is now a reggae singer.
Yes, life is good for the former Poly Prep standout. That is especially true after last week, when Noah, a 6-10 center, performed better than any other player in the annual ABCD basketball camp at Fairleigh Dickinson University.

The expanding Atlantic Coast Conference has ready its request to reduce the minimum number of teams required for a league title game.
Under current NCAA regulations, only conferences with 12 or more teams can hold a football championship game. The ACC's proposal, which would reduce the minimum to 10, must be submitted to the NCAA by Tuesday.

Even before the Cleveland Cavaliers made LeBron James the No. 1 pick in last month's NBA draft, basketball junkies had their eyes open for the next high school legend.
The next big thing on the high school horizon isn't Sebastian Telfair. Anyone who knows the difference between a jump shot and a jump ball knows that the Brooklyn point guard, who has been hyped for years, is the cousin of former Nets' guard Stephon Marbury. He's already old news. Basketball fans who truly want to see the future have to look further ahead.

Every so often, still searching but still hopeful, they call Bob Mahony's office. They want the secret. Every college athletic administrator in the country wants Mahony's secret. Just think of the possibilities if they could establish for their schools what Mahony helps maintain at Clemson -- an athletic department that spins money like a cotton candy machine.
