Nova Impresses in First Scrimmage

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- In the first of three preseason scrimmages, sophomore Gary Nova had the upper hand when it comes to the quarterback battle. Nova and junior Chas Dodd remain in a battle for the starting spot, but Nova may have an edge after his scrimmage performance.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- The Rutgers quarterback battle is not nearly decided, but sophomore Gary Nova has the edge coming out of today's open fan scrimmage.

Nova, who threw one touchdown and had one interception, out-performed junior Chas Dodd in today's scrimmage, said coach Kyle Flood. Although the initial impressions are in Nova's favor, the battle will not be won off of one scrimmage alone.

"I haven't had a chance to watch the film yet, so I'll probably have a little bit more of a comment on it on Monday," Flood said. "I think just watching on the field, I think Gary probably had a little bit better day than Chas did. What I would stress to everybody is when we ultimately make this decision; it won't be based on one day. It's going to be based on a body of work."

Nova felt confident in his performance, but said there is a lot of room to grow.

"It went pretty well," Nova said. "I think as a whole offense, we did some things that were pretty impressive. Personally, I was frustrated with my turnover. I can't do that. It's frustrating, but you have to learn from it. It wasn't like I made a really bad decision. I threw a careless pass and it got tipped. The linebacker made a good play."

Dodd spent less time against the first-team defense and experienced success in his own right. With two touchdowns and zero turnovers, the junior gunslinger continues to protect the ball despite struggles against the pass rush in the pocket.

"I think it was OK," Dodd said. "We came out and did a lot of what we wanted to do. ... I feel good about how I played, but I know I can improve. It's an every-day competition and I just have to get better."

Flood has said he hopes to have a decision 10 days before kickoff.

"I don't try to think about it," Nova said. "Of course I do, but I just go out there and focus on me. Coach is going to make a decision and it's going to be the best one for everyone."

Flood addressed the quarterbacks and much more in his media day press conference. The full question and answer session can be found here.
