An attorney for the Atlantic Coast Conference filed a motion Monday to dismiss the Big East's lawsuit against the conference expansion plans.
Four Big East football schools, including the University of Connecticut, are seeking millions of dollars in damages claiming the ACC conspired with Big East member Miami to join the ACC and weaken the Big East. The lawsuit was filed June 6 in a Connecticut court.

Around the nation

Ohio State president Karen Holbrook said yesterday the athletic department will investigate a report that football star Maurice Clarett received assistance to pass a class before the Fiesta Bowl.
The New York Times reported for yesterday's editions that the running back passed African-American and African Studies 101 by taking two oral exams.
Paulette Pierce, an associate professor, told the newspaper she worked directly with Clarett and administered the exams after he walked out of the course's midterm exam during the fall semester.

After looking foolish against lightning-fast Celtics' rookie point guard Marcus Banks in the opening 10 minutes, James showed glimpses of why he is expected to save the Cavaliers and be the NBA's marquee player for the next decade or so.
