2014 RB McKenzie Hearing from Rutgers

Washington High School (Pa.) 2014 running back Shai McKenzie received a visit from Rutgers this week. Holding seven verbal scholarship offers, McKenzie discusses his thoughts on the beginning of his recruitment and his thoughts on the Scarlet Knights.

Washington High School (Pa.) 2014 running back Shai McKenzie holds seven verbal scholarship offers and thinks that No. 8 is on its way.

Visited by Rutgers tight ends coach Darnell Dinkins, McKenzie said he was told an offer is coming soon.

"Probably next week," McKenzie said. "…They said they were going to offer soon."

McKenzie holds multiple BCS offers, including Pittsburgh, Purdue, Maryland and Connecticut. Though he lives close to Pittsburgh, he said it is too early to name leaders, specifically because of the increase in coaching changes.

"I don't have a favorite school," he said. "They're all really the same right now. I haven't looked much into any school yet. When I start to plan out official visits and camps is when I'll decide that. It's a long way away.'

McKenzie watched the Rutgers game against Pittsburgh and said he has been hearing a lot from the Scarlet Knights since the start of the junior contact period.

"I really appreciate what I've been hearing from Rutgers and all of these colleges," McKenzie said. "Overall I'm just blessed. They run the ball a lot and I think I could be a good player for Rutgers, and they told me they really like me as a running back.

"The last time I watched them, they didn't player very well against Pittsburgh, but I like that they run the ball a lot. The run game is a big part of their offense and that's definitely what I'm looking for."

McKenzie said he will take visits now that his season is over, but has not planned any for the winter. A chance to play early, he added, is his top interest.

"I feel if a college wants me so bad, they're going to want to use me," he said. "I want to play my freshman year. A lot of people redshirt as a freshman, but I'm looking for a school that wants me to play – a chance to compete and play right away.

"I'm a big back, but I'm a little shifty and fast," I think I can bring a lot to colleges that look for a bigger-set running back. I work hard in the classroom, so overall I'm pretty balanced."
