Dwight Morrow High (Englewood, N.J.) safety Naiquan Thomas does not have a Rutgers offer but could be in line for one Feb. 1 when he takes an official visit.

Thomas, a late-bloomer in the process, saw his recruitment surge in January after success in the SATs. He received an in-school visit yesterday from Rutgers linebackers coach Dave Cohen and is set for an official visit.

"He's a good guy," Thomas said on Cohen. "He makes you feel comfortable. He told me he's going to let me know on [my visit] if they're going to offer me."

Thomas, a 6-foot-1, 200-pound safety, is receiving interest from Maryland and Syracuse, Rhode Island and Albany.

Rhode Island offered and Albany is close to doing so, he said.

"I got my SAT scores and they were high, so some schools are back in the picture for me," Thomas said. "Albany is supposed to offer me when I visit and Rhode Island is recruiting me a lot."

Rhode Island, Albany and Rutgers will be his final three visits. He will not make a decision until after receiving final word from Rutgers.

If Rutgers offers, Thomas expects to sign with the Scarlet Knights, he said.

"They can see me playing safety there," Thomas said. "They like my tackling. They said I can tackle well in open space and that's what they do with their safeties.

"I like them. They're good. I would love to be with them in the Big Ten for the next four years."

Thomas played multiple positions for Morrow, but is being recruited by schools exclusively as a safety.

"[Rutgers] has been telling me they like me as an athlete on defense," he said. "Coach Cohen is talking to me a lot after my SAT."
