"I feel like it was a perfect fit for me," Rector said. "I really like coach Rice and I like their playing style. I feel like I can have a good career playing at Rutgers."
"It's a relief that the recruiting process is over because it can be tough," Rector said. "It's definitely relieving to know that I'm going to a good school."
Rector is the first class of 2013 prospect to commit to Rutgers and marks the first commitment of a high school prospect in more than a year.
"They're getting a point guard that can run the offense, a point guard that can create for teammates off the dribble and make other players better," said South Kent coach Kelvin Jefferson. "He's also the type of player that can score, get his own shot and keep other players honest because he's capable of scoring. He's really good at getting his teammates involved and getting his teammates shots inside."
Jefferson said Rector is a good fit for the Big East and will be excited to move to the Big Ten along with Rutgers basketball.
"It's local and he's close to family and knows the area," Jefferson said on Rutgers. "He has friends that go to school there. It's a great school and he's a great student. The other thing is that the staff there does a great job developing their guards. They saw a need that they needed to fill with a guard like Shane and he's going to be a good fit as a competitor. He's going to a school that not just wants him, but needs him."
