Basketball Coaching Hotboard: Updated

The Rutgers basketball coaching search drags on in the aftermath of the Mike Rice scandal. Without a permanent athletic director, interim athletic director Carl Kirschner and senior assistant athletic director Doug Fillis head the search which has all eyes on Los Angeles Lakers assistant Eddie Jordan.

Rutgers may be nearing an end when it comes to the search for its next head basketball coach. Firing Mike Rice two weeks ago, the Scarlet Knights have set their sights on Los Angeles Lakers assistant Eddie Jordan, who returns to Piscataway, N.J., Wednesday night.

Eddie Jordan

Current Job -- Los Angeles Lakers, assistant coach

Rundown -- Jordan is a former Rutgers star and was in the mix during the last coaching search. After an unsuccessful stint as the head coach of the Washington Wizards, Jordan bounced around as an NBA assistant. Jordan was not chosen with Pernetti at the head of the search but presents an option with NBA experience and true ties to Rutgers. Jordan traveled to Rutgers last week for preliminary talks about the job and is set for a return to meet with President Robert Barchi and talk contract.

Temperature: Hot

Dave Cox

Current Job -- Rutgers interim head coach

Rundown -- Cox was all class and undefeated when taking over for Rice during his suspension in December. He has no head-coaching experience, but strong ties to the area in recruiting and is well-liked in the locker room. Cox could be big in keeping the rest of the roster intact. Association with Rice and lack of experience do not help here. He has the support of everyone left in the basketball program and is the best option as a recruiter. Direct ties to Rice's behavior over the past three years can be a killer, however.

Temperature: Room temperature.

Al Skinner

Current Job -- Former Boston College head coach

Rundown -- The former 13-year head coach of Boston College showed previous interest in the vacant Rutgers position but has been away from head coaching since decade-long stints at Rhode Island and Boston College. Skinner is a realistic option to pursue should talks with Jordan break apart.

Temperature: Cold.

John Giannini

Current Job -- La Salle head coach

Rundown -- Giannini turned La Salle from a lower-tier program to one that shocked the world in the NCAA tournament. Initially one of the less likely choices, Giannini saw his stock soar after Tim Pernetti's resignation and the loss of other options. Giannini brings head-coaching experience and excelled in New Jersey while at Rowan in his first job.

Temperature: Cold

Steve Masiello

Current Job -- Manhattan head coach

Rundown — Masiello gave Manhattan back-to-back winning seasons in his first two years as a head coach. The former Kentucky guard and Louisville assistant represents a small-school hire with local ties and interest in building up a program like Rutgers headed to the Big Ten.

Temperature: Cold.

Bill Carmody

Current Job -- Former Northwestern head coach

Rundown -- Carmody is looking for work after losing his job at Northwestern and has experience recruiting in New Jersey. He also has experience coaching in New Jersey as the former head coach at Princeton.

Temperature: Cold

Danny Hurley

Current Job -- Rhode Island head coach

Rundown -- The Hurley name is as good as it gets in New Jersey but efforts to court him early in the process failed and led to an expected extension with Rhode Island.

Temperature: Cold
