Lott has had Rutgers high on his list since watching the program's success at defensive back in the NFL draft and made things official Thursday morning.
"It's a lot off my shoulders," Lott said. "I'm really excited. I talked it over with my family. The tradition of Rutgers is like no other. The academics and what coach Flood is trying to do there is what I'm about."
"I think I can play well with the sort of players they have," he said. "Just how coach Flood is trying to win a national championship. I feel I can come and help out and be a part of a national championship team."
Lott committed to Rutgers without visiting the campus but set up a June 7 unofficial trip today during his conversation with Flood.
"I met coach [Jim] Panagos before, but just meeting my future teammates," Lott said on expectations for his visit. "It's a home setting far away from my house."
The family atmosphere and feel from the program was a strong draw for Lott, who feels ready to add to the program.
"I'm a leader," he said. "I'm just a competitor and they're getting a good team player. They're getting another brother."
