Russell unofficially visited Rutgers today and left coach Kyle Flood's office as the latest commitment in the class of 2014.
"It was a blessing," Russell said. "I feel extremely blessed and they welcomed me in with open arms. They've showed me nothing but love in recruiting."
Russell is the former teammate of freshmen Nick Internicola, who committed to Rutgers last summer.
The 6-foot-1, 217-pound linebacker visited Rutgers today to meet with the coaches and said it solidified his choice.
"The visit was very nice," Russell said. "It's a nice, great campus. It had everything I was looking for academically and was just great."
Rutgers assistants Dave Cohen and Jim Panagos were both active in 2013 recruiting University School and built strong relationships with the school.
Russell said he enjoyed time spent today with the coaching staff and meeting with Flood.
"The coaches are very honest with me from the start, showing me love," he said. "It's a great coaching staff. I feel very comfortable with them."
Able to play multiple spots defensively, Russell projects best at outside linebacker in his 4-3 scheme and represents the second commitment in the class of 2014 at the position.
"I'm a good fit for them," he said. "I play fast, I play hard. That's what Rutgers defense is all about. I'm also a smart guy, and that's what I'm looking for. I have a little work to do, but I'm confident that I'm going to get better and keep working hard. Right now, I'm just excited to be committed to Rutgers."
