New York G Williams Commits to Rutgers

Bishop Laughlin (N.Y.) guard Mike Williams verbally committed to Rutgers this afternoon to become the third member of the class of 2014. Williams' father, Mike Williams Sr., confirmed the commitment and discussed what made Rutgers stand out.

Bishop Laughlin (N.Y.) guard Mike Williams found the perfect fit in Rutgers, according to his father Mike Williams Sr.

"We just committed today," Williams Sr. said. "I say we because it was a family decision, but it's really the perfect fit for him. He made the choice."

Williams is a 6-foot-2 shooting guard that plays for the AAU team New York Lightning. He chose Rutgers over offers from Creighton, Temple. St. John's and Virginia.

"We were very impressed with Eddie Jordan and what he can do," Williams Sr. said. "He has experience in the pros. It's a good place for Mike to go and learn under someone like coach Jordan."

The Williams family has a strong relationship with assistant coach Van Macon, who recruited Williams dating back more than a year.

"Coach Van Macon has been recruiting him probably longer than any other coach," he said. "He has a good relationship with Mike and he's been recruiting him really since he was a sophomore. It really was a no brainer."

Proximity to home was key.

"It's close but not too close," Williams Sr. said. "He can get the whole college experience of being away but our family can come see him play really any time."

Williams averaged 14.4 points per game as a junior and shot 41 percent from long range.

"He's a team player," Williams Sr. said. "He looks to make the extra pass when he has to. He takes the shot when he needs to. He's just a player. That's what I tell him. Go out there and have fun."
