On the Gridiron

Rutgers breaks training camp tomorrow with Fresno State kickoff less than two weeks away. The Scarlet Knights have a double session today before a morning practice Tuesday and the start of game preparations.

The Rutgers defense responded Saturday night in the final training camp scrimmage. The defense held Gary Nova close to 50 percent passing and continued to pile up sack numbers against the first and second team offense. Following the scrimmage, head coach Kyle Flood said he sees the team as close to game-ready.

Senior linebacker and team captain Jamal Merrell got married Saturday night. He missed Friday and Saturday of training camp, alongside brother Jamil Merrell, but the pair returns this morning ready to go.

Wide receiver Brandon Coleman and tight end Tyler Kroft remain limited in training camp with leg injuries.

Senior Andre Civil passed Chris Muller for the first team spot at right guard. The position will continue to be evaluated going into the season opener, Flood said, and will include Antwan Lowery.

In Recruiting

Jersey City (N.J.) St. Peters Prep running back Jonathan Hilliman committed to Rutgers over finalist Ohio State.

The three-star Hilliman committed less than a week after an unofficial visit alongside Manalapan receiver commit Saeed Blacknall.

Sparta (N.J.) Pope John XXIII wide receiver Noah Brown will have a decision by his Sept. 12 high-school opener. After naming Ohio State a leader three weeks ago, Brown twice visited Rutgers and is also looking at Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech.

Tight end teammate Ryan Izzo has official visits set to Florida State and Wisconsin before he plans to make a decision.

Cypress Bay (Fla.) cornerback Deion Hallmon said he plans to announce his college choice at the end of the week. Hallmon still intends to take multiple official visits after his decision.

Manahawkin (N.J.) Southern tight end Mike Gesicki told FOXSportsNEXT.com he plans to visit Rutgers for a practice shortly before the team leaves for Fresno State.

Erasmus Hall (New York) four-star athlete Curtis Samuel committed to Ohio State over Rutgers.
