Defensive Coordinator Hotboard: Updated

Rutgers coach Kyle Flood would like to get his defensive coordinator hired soon, approaching spring enrollment and finished with Pinstripe Bowl activities. Flood fired defensive coordinator Dave Cohen in early December, and approaches the second month of his search for a replacement.

Robb Smith
Current Position:
Departing Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebackers coach
Age:
38
Thermometer:
Hot
BCS (or higher) Play-calling Experience:
One Year
Notable:
Preceded Cohen as Rutgers defensive coordinator. Smith is looking for a new spot after the staff overhaul in Tampa.
Positives:
Proven Rutgers play-caller, familiar with personnel and Rutgers recruiting efforts, NFL experience with linebackers
Negatives:
Only negative here is that Smith only has the 2012 season as a BCS play caller.

Frank Spaziani
Current Position:
Former Boston College head coach
Age:
66
Thermometer:
Warm
BCS (or higher) Play-calling Experience:
22 Years
Notable:
Spaziani remains a hot target, but his name is also involved in the vacancy at Massachusetts. He recruited New Jersey while at Boston College as head coach and a coordinator.
Positives:
Major play-calling experience, successful while defensive coordinator with Boston College, knows how to manage a locker room
Negatives:
Spaziani is an older option, has been out of football since firing at Boston College, bad defenses during end of B.C. tenure

Joe Rossi
Current Position:
Rutgers interim defensive coordinator
Age:
34
Thermometer:
Room Temperature
BCS (or higher) Play-calling Experience:
One game
Notable:
Rossi showed subtle improvements over Cohen with the same roster against Notre Dame. Still, his defense surrendered nearly 500 yards in the loss.
Positives:
Knows the roster, success on special teams, popular locker room choice
Negatives:
Least experienced option, last in-house coordinator promotion (Cohen) did not work

Bob Fraser
Current Position:
Departing Tampa Bay Buccaneers assistant defensive coordinator
Age:
50
Thermometer:
Room Temperature
BCS (or higher) Play-calling Experience:
Three years
Notable:
Fraser is another former Rutgers coach looking for a home after the firing of Greg Schiano in Tampa. He was the defensive coordinator at Rutgers in title alone under Schiano.
Positives:
Experience recruiting New Jersey, NFL experience, long-time connection with Flood
Negatives:
Defensive coordinator experience came while Schiano called plays, small-school background prior to Rutgers, not known as big recruiter
Ron Vanderlinden
Current Position:
Departing Penn State linebackers coach
Age:
57
Thermometer:
Room Temperature
BCS (or higher) Play-calling Experience:
Six years
Notable:
Leaving Penn State, Vanderlinden interviewed for the Rutgers vacancy and brings two decades of Bit Ten experience.

Negatives:
Adjustments to Rutgers style and roster personnel, has not been full-time coordinator in 17 years
