Ports Closing in on Decision?

Newark (N.J.) Weequahic defensive back Al-Kadair Ports earned a Rutgers offer and will be on campus this weekend as a part of the underclassman visitor day. Ports previewed his visit and discussed his decision timeline with Scout.com.

Newark (N.J.) Weequahic defensive back Al-Kadair Ports thinks a decision could be close, and will be at Rutgers this weekend for his first visit since receiving an offer.

Ports landed a Rutgers offer in February, and sees his on-campus experience this weekend as "huge" in considering a decision.

"I'm definitely excited for Rutgers," Ports said. "I want to see that it feels like home. I'm hoping to see a lot of stuff, but the first thing is to make sure it feels like home."

Ports has interest from many schools in the region, but the 6-foot-1, 185-pound three-star prospect only holds a Rutgers offer so far.

"Yeah, I'm close to a decision," Ports said. "… I'm definitely close."

Ports received an offer during a conversation with defensive coordinator Joe Rossi. He has a relationship with Rossi dating back to last season, but wants to meet the rest of the staff this weekend.

"It will be really important to talk to [coach Kyle Flood] because he can ask me some questions and I can ask him some questions," Ports said. "I like the coaches from what I know. I'm excited to see how the team runs. I'm excited to meet the guys on the team."

Ports is hearing daily from teammate Sidney Gopre, who signed with Rutgers in February.

"Sidney has told me a lot about the coaches and what it's like," Ports said. "He's always there if I have to ask him a question about Rutgers."

Ports checks in as the No. 50 safety in the class of 2015. He is receiving interest from Temple, Penn State and Virginia along with his offer from the Scarlet Knights.
