QB, Position Changes Highlight Spring 2-Deep

There are no drastic but many noteworthy position changes at Rutgers headed into spring practice. Releasing the 2014 pre-spring depth chart, Rutgers coach Kyle Flood answered some questions at quarterback and moved players around to find the best fits.

When Rutgers takes the field Tuesday morning for spring practice, Senior Gary Nova and walk-on Devin Ray will be on equal footing at quarterback. Rutgers coach Kyle Flood released the pre-spring depth chart Monday afternoon, and every eligible quarterback on the roster is now a co-starter at the position.

Listed in order of experience, Flood lists Nova, Mike Bimonte, Blake Rankin, Chris Laviano and Ray as co-starters.

At running back, Paul James remains the starter but will be limited in spring practice because of a shoulder injury. With Savon Huggins (shoulder) out, Justin Goodwin, Desmon Peoples and Devan Carter get the rest of the work in that order.

The most notable offensive line notes come on the second team. Walk-on Bryan Leoni checks in as the second-team left tackle with sophomore Ryan Brodie cracking the two deep at right tackle. Sophomore Derrick Nelson moved to center and passed Brandon Arcidiacono at the position.

Defensive News

A projected move became official Monday when Kevin Snyder and Steve Longa switched places on at linebacker. Longa moves back to weakside linebacker after a strong freshman season at the MIKE. Snyder moves to middle linebacker with Quentin Gause earning the starting spot at strongside linebacker. T.J. Taylor remains at linebacker, but Davon Jacobs returns to safety this spring.

The biggest defensive line move is for Sebastian Joseph to move to the nose tackle. From the 3-technique spot.

In the defensive secondary, Delon Stephenson moves from cornerback to safety, where he is a co-starter. Ian Thomas is already back on the two-deep after leaving the team midway through last season.

No early enrollees start the year on the two-deep.

Special Teams Shakeups

Rutgers needs a new holder and a new long snapper. Bimonte and Snyder get the first attempts. Bimonte replaces J.T. Tartacoff as the starting holder for spring practice No. 1. Snyder steps in as the long snapper with tight end Taylor Marini behind him. Incoming freshman Alan Lucy projects to replace him this summer.

Kyle Federico will handle kickoff duties to replace Nick Marsh.
