Roberts Chooses Rutgers

Brooklyn (N.Y.) Erasmus Hall linebacker Deonte Roberts did not need to think long after receiving a Rutgers offer during visit this week. Roberts made the call to commit to Rutgers Friday, where he is headed to the Big Ten as a member of the 2015 recruiting class.

What does Brooklyn (N.Y.) Erasmus Hall linebacker Deonte Roberts plan to bring Rutgers as its newest verbal commitment? The answer was simple to Roberts, who made his decision Friday afternoon.

"Championships," Roberts said. "That's it."

Roberts earned an offer during a visit. The decision shortly afterwards was an easy one, he said.

"I love it," he said. "It's close to home and my family can come see me play. It's like a family at Rutgers that I'm joining, and they're on the rise."

At 6-foot-2, 210 pounds, Roberts picked Rutgers over UCF after impressing in front of the staff.

"It's good to be near New York because my family can see me play while I get a great education," Roberts said. "I got to meet the staff and I got to see what everybody is like there. I felt like I was just at home and I loved it."

Roberts hit it off with linebackers coach Bob Fraser, formerly of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and head coach Kyle Flood – a native New Yorker.

"Coach Fraser is a great guy," Roberts said. "He's already pushing me hard to improve. He knows a lot about the system. He said I will fit well in their system. … Coach Flood cares about his players a lot. That's obvious."

Roberts is the second New Yorker in the Rutgers class of 2015 alongside Kamaal Seymour. He will not be on campus with Erasmus Hall for the 7 on 7 tomorrow, but will be back soon.

Joining the Big Ten, Roberts is eager to face off against Ohio State and former teammate Curtis Samuel.

"The Big Ten is great football," he said. "Curtis is enrolling there and we've talked about it already."
