Nova Named Starter

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Gary Nova will remain the starting quarterback for the Scarlet Knights. Making an announcement between two-a-day sessions Wednesday, Rutgers coach Kyle Flood named Nova his starter after a solid first week of training camp.

The first Rutgers position battle of training camp has been decided. Rutgers coach Kyle Flood named Gary Nova his starting quarterback after six training camp practices.

The decision comes one day after a 9-for-16 passing performance in a semi scrimmage for the Scarlet Knights.

Nova worked the majority of spring and summer as the No. 1 quarterback, and can now move on to Washington State preparation after formally winning the job.

With 28 career starters in three years, No. 29 comes in 22 days in Seattle.

“I think it puts things in perspective when you realize, ‘wow. It’s my last year,’” Nova said. “The urgency level is definitely boosted up. You just look at these guys and you want to go out the right way. You want to do things right for your fellow seniors.”

Nova lost his starting job to Chas Dodd after an inconsistent junior season. He worked the majority of spring, and all of yesterday’s semi scrimmage as the starter.

“Guys kind of just rallied around each other,” Nova said of yesterday’s scrimmage. “It was a coming-out period, so we started on the one-inch line, and I guess Coach just let us keep going down the field and we kept making plays. It was back and forth. The defense made plays. We made plays, and Leonte finished it with a great catch in the end zone.”

Nova is down to 215 pounds as a senior, and said he is in the best shape of any point in his Rutgers tenure.

“It’s just the strength staff,” he said. “It was a great job, great summer just being disciplined in what I was eating. Last year I lost a lot of weight. This year, I kind of wanted to tone up, get in better shape. This is the best shape that I’ve been, even better than last year – physically and mentally. As a team, we’re in great shape.”

Update: publisher Sam Hellman and national recruiting analyst Brian Dohn break down the quarterback position.
