Scrimmage Recap: Quarterback Commentary

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Quarterbacks Gary Nova and Chris Laviano each attempted more than 20 passes in a two-hour scrimmage Monday for Rutgers. Nova, the starter, and Laviano, a competitor for the backup job, spoke with ScarletReport.com at the end of the scrimmage about their performances.

Senior Gary Nova, already named starting quarterback, threw for 159 yards and two touchdowns in his first camp scrimmage. Completing 16 of 21 passes, Nova broke down what went well with the offense and what needs to improve with the second scrimmage coming Saturday.

Redshirt freshman Chris Laviano remains in a competition for the backup job against junior Mike Bimonte. Lavaino saw more action in situation drills, and finished his Monday 13 for 23 for 108 yards and one touchdown.

Head coach Kyle Flood said after practice that the battle for backup quarterback will be decided soon after the tape is reviewed from the scrimmage.
