Thursday Practice Report: Speed vs. Speed

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- From crowd noise to team health to game-planning for an Urban Meyer team, Rutgers head coach Kyle Flood broke it all down in his final media availability before wheels go up on the way to Columbus.

Rutgers leaves for Buckeye country Friday as underdogs against No. 13 Ohio State. Head coach Kyle Flood met the media for the final time before kickoff after Thursday’s morning walkthrough.

The Headline -- Rutgers and Ohio State both place an emphasis on recruiting speed, and it often means battling for the same guys within the region.

As recently as Glassboro (N.J.) cornerback Ronnie James, the Buckeyes and Scarlet Knights both recruit speed first. That speed goes head-to-head Saturday.

“I think that speed is something that we value here as well,” Flood said. “We want to be a physical team. We want to be a fast team as well. I like the matchups.”

Rutgers recruited Ohio State freshman Curtis Samuel heavily, who projects to play a key role at running back this weekend.

“I think the one thing that is synonymous with (Urban Meyer’s) offense at Florida and now at Ohio State is speed,” Flood said. “He’s always got speed all over the field.”

Worth Noting -- In the latest example of not taking the Monday injury report too seriously, center Betim Bujari practiced for the second straight day and Flood said he feels good about where things stand. The updated injury report is expected Thursday evening.

Quote of the Day -- “I don’t know if [simulated crowd noise] sounds exactly the same. I don’t know if that matters. I think what matters is that you’ve got to get it to a point to where you can’t communicate and that’s what we’ve done. … That’s the part for me that’s critical – the ability to practice without having your verbal communication system. I’ve heard of coaches that don’t use crowd noise, but they have practice and nobody’s allowed to talk.”
