Rutgers Lands WR Simmons

Bethlehem (Pa.) Catholic wide receiver Freddie Simmons is the newest member of the Rutgers football recruiting class. The three-star receiver verbally committed Tuesday afternoon to head coach Kyle Flood over finalists from the AAC and American Athletic Conference.

Rutgers was one of the first schools involved in recruiting Bethlehem (Pa.) Catholic wide receiver Freddie Simmons, and that meant something to the three-star target. The 6-foot-3, 176-pound receiver visited campus multiple times since a winter offer, and now plans to call it his home.

Simmons made his verbal commitment to Rutgers Tuesday afternoon following his team’s practice. He picked the Scarlet Knights over finalists UCF, Wake Forest and Virginia.

The addition fuels one of the most-needed positions for Rutgers with a lack of receiver depth on the active roster. Rutgers returns, at best, six scholarship receivers to its 2015 roster after signing zero 2014s at the position.

Simmons joins 2015 receiver commits Rashad Blunt (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Dontae Owens (Reading, Pa.) and 2016 Mohamed Jabbie (South Brunswick, N.J.).
